It’s funny how things work out for the best sometimes. i was up late last night working on a big surprise for all of you. So late that i had to sleep in and take the 10 am class this morning. that’s been my one 8 am class of the week ever since football season began! with the packers working on their tee times, i decided to sleep in a little today. Class was on the humid side this morning—i can’t believe it is still holiday crowded! after practise, i had breakfast at my friend’s apartment by the beach. i forgot how nice it is to be so close to the water. what a brat i am. i think i live far from the ocean because it’s 2 miles away—most of you are landlocked, so i apologize. not to rub it in but, it was also really nice at the beach today. oh boy, nice day to sit in the sand, sorry landlubbers! My new friends aren’t afraid to step out of the bikram studio and experiment a little by checking out the ashtanga studio in town. i’ve only ever been to the bikram studio. sometimes i think it would be cool to check out other studios, but the way my life is organized right now, practising bikram yoga is the most practical thing in the world for me. i really think the big guy upstairs had a hand in this because not many people have it so nice. some people are in a rush to make it across town to bang out some yoga, me on the other hand? i pedal to class, really never that far away from the studio. before the bike, i used to walk! remember that, longtimers? well, i just want you to know how fortunate i feel to be so close and able to practise so frequently. i really do consider it a blessing that i do not take lightly. namaste, m

my teacher’s grandfather in-law is turning 100. He’s still sharp as a tack and says the secret to a long life is a glass of red wine a day and lots of sex! Oh no, i’m doomed to a short life, ha ha. Seriously, i think everyone has heard that red wine isn’t bad for you with the antioxidants and other things i can’t remember, but i don’t think i’ve ever heard anything about sex playing a role in life expectancy. It makes sense to me, sharing that very intense energy has to be healthy, right? i practised next to a girl today who din’t take water once, it made me feel like a wimp. okay sweat friends, see you tomorrow for some more exciting playoff football and join me for a lakers game too! ~m

Oh my gosh heartbreakers, the new year is still a surprise to me. What a thing to say, surprise! Like i din’t know it was coming. Well, so it’s no surprise to my sweat friends in kentucky, you guys are in for a treat! In Louisville, Bikram Yoga is practised at Hot Spot Yoga. On the 24th and 25th, Jason Winn will be leading the beginning yoga series and the advanced series! He packs a lot of wisdom and insight during his time with you and, seriously, you’ll be so happy you reserved your space. Here’s a cute picture i found on his website!

Today was cold and gray, even raining at times, that made for a humid and sweaty noon class. really, i din’t feel like i needed water at all today, but i was sweating so much, i drank a couple times, just because it seemed wise. okay sweat friends, see you tomorrow ~m

“do you need someone to kiss at midnight?” what a line to use on that cute girl in the market parking lot! especially since you ran out of things to say after hi when the two of you first saw each other in the aisle in the store. if only you had thought of it actually in the parking lot instead of when you’re about to start writing your blog. i’m sorry—you are such a loser—seriously, it’s a wonder we stay friends, you and your good manners. i shouldn’t be so hard on you, that was a pretty debilitating class tonight, i can’t expect you to be thinking clearly after something like that. hey, speaking of friends, my new sweat friends told me they din’t like our studio because everyone is so social-casual before practise! The talking and what not was really getting to one of the sisters. She would not have liked the beginning of the Last Practise of The Year (insert scream and dance here)! The room was feeling not warm at all and this guy walks in and doesn’t bother closing the door. since he was matting out close by, someone asked him to close the door and he got all defensive, like, it’s gonna get hot enough, nyuk nyuk. Some people don’t get it, ironically you knew that about him by looking at his tattoos. Meow, did i write that or think it? damn, no wonder you don’t have any friends. aren’t you tattooed freaks all supposed to be supportive of each other? maybe i’m the one who doesn’t get it. alright heartbreakers, see you tomorrow for the First Practise of The Year! ~m

i was feeling a little dehydrated before class today but i think it was all in my head. at least, that’s what i told myself anyway. when we got to the water break after garurasana, i wasn’t sweating too much and i decided not to partake. my teacher the other day challenged us to not drink during the water break and, since it had been so long since i abstained from water during practise, i decided to finish the rest of class without. you wanna know what? i was fine the whole way through! i eat healthy enough—lots of fruit—and i’m always drinking water. the only reason why i felt dehydrated was because i missed out on 16 ounces of water this morning. silly me, it *was* all in my head.

i have a good rapport with some of my teachers. after class today my teacher pardoned her generalization and told me that men burn her up. that’s okay, i said, i don’t like women, ha ha. That’s not true, it’s just that most women are not to be trusted, is all. Well, maybe i should get to my point. Just because we practise yoga does not mean we are well-adjusted mentally. i’ve got 37 years of negative energy in my body before i found bikram yoga, i think i’ve got a long way to go until i am even close to being well-adjusted. i’m okay with that because it’s all about little steps. like tearing one page out of a phonebook everyday, it’s a slow process, but it will happen if you just keep at it. okay sweat friends, see you tomorrow!

The Drawbacks of Bikram Yoga but Also How I Learned to Love My Bike.

Did you know Saudi Arabia exports $400 million dollars in oil a day? In 5 days, that’s 2 billion dollars! If you ask me, the automaker bailout money should have come from saudi arabia, not the U.S. government. If you drive and don’t get disgusted with how much money the saudis make—fuck off. seriously.

One drawback of bikram yoga always being the same routine over and over again is that a lot of people get on auto-pilot. Our teacher today must have said “wait for me, please” before every posture until she finally accepted the fact that the guy behind me wasn’t gonna wait for her. My buddy did something similar the day before—we were going into standing forehead to knee, but he was going into standing bow. Our teacher called him out *by name,* but he was oblivious, so i whispered to him “you’re xxxx” and then he finally got with the rest of class. I think we’ve all done similar things, my point is that it’s really important to be patient and wait for the instructions. Treat every class like it’s your first class! Let go of your memories and listen to the instructions like you’ve never heard them before! Seriously, you’ll have a better practise, i promise! Just try it once, honest. hasta tomorrow ~m

Well, the packers somehow managed to squeak out a win over the lions this morning. it was really looking hairball for a bit too, so it was actually an exciting game! I can’t believe i was able to see it on the internet! It wasn’t the best quality, but it was free and a lot better than the javascript play by play i followed the entire season. At least, i’m getting a little bit more internet savvy! i was able to catch the lakers game the same way this evening! That one was in pretty decent quality too and, again, it was free. So much better than paying way too much for the broadband access that nba offers. I had an unusually cool class this morning. i really had to give my all today to build up a sweat. i ended up having a really good stretch as a result. my lower back is feeling so much better, like it’s almost where it should be, that’s how nice it feels. During practise, when i’m all stretchy, it feels the best. Oh my gosh, i smile so much during practise sometimes, sweat pouring into my mouth, but i can’t help it, i feel so good! hasta tomorrow, sweat friends! ~m

Well, tomorrow we wrap up the end of what has turned out to be a pretty dismal football season for the packers. Like i told my buddy the other day, i sat through a 4-12 season not too long ago, so this year could have gone worse. Look at the packers’ opponent tomorrow, the 0-15 lions. oh my god, can you imagine? that’ s what has me so worried about tomorrow’ s game. The packers are due for a win, but so are the lions. Oh my gosh, i think it’ s going to be an exciting game—two desperate teams anxious to get one win before the season is over! Very dramatic, but only if you’ re a fan of either team, i suppose. Great crowded class today, the room actually felt hot, i couldn’ t believe it! see you tomorrow sweat friends! ~m

I was still pretty close to the grunter though. What was up with that? Awww, who am i to talk? After practise i went down to the cliffs and not only were there a ton of surfers, but in a non-surfing spot, there were dolphins! It was cool, that was the first time i’d ever seen a dolphin! Were you like me—remembering all the corrections you’ve gotten in each posture over the past year? I also try and remember something aimee said once “the posture doesn’t begin until you want it to end.” After practise, i headed down to the coast. You know, Bikram din’t add heat to the postures until a student started bringing in a portable heater. Okay, now that i got that off my chest, why has the room been so not hot lately? it was so nice to be at practise today, even if it wasn’t as hot as it should have been.
guess what i did after practise today? since the packers aren’t playing until tomorrow i took a quick shopping spree at the market next door. If you happen to be at new leaf in the next week, be sure to take advantage of one of their sale items. Uncle Eddie’s vegan cookies has a new flavor on sale now—Cocoa Spice and Everything Nice! I must say, these cookies are pretty tasty, accented with cinammon and cloves, it’s the perfect winter cookie. Even better, no animals were harmed in the making of these cookies! New Leaf also has a good everyday deal on energy saver light bulbs. I went to bongs to buy light bulbs and they were 12 dollars for 2! Oh my gosh, i can’t afford light, not at bongs anyway. Luckily new leaf has the same style bulbs at 2 for 2 dollars. for the record i am not brand loyal when it comes to light bulbs. oh yeah, i read that there has been a surge in sales for the shoe company that made the shoe that was thrown at GWB.
Thank God for the internet Part 2.Well, i was a little disappointed with last night’s nba.com offerings. i received a 24-hour broadband pass to watch the games online a while back, so i figured i would watch the lakers-heat, but it was blacked out because it was on espn! Bummer for me, but at least the radio broadcast was working. After the game, i tried watching “zach and miri make a porno.” wow, what predictable characters. I only made it through 15 minutes or so before i said goodbye to them. i ended up watching “the day the earth stood still”—i was embarrassed at how exciting i thought it was! seriously, the first 40 minutes were really good. Then they got some stupid kid involved, which was lame, and then it became so message-y at the end that i din’t feel bad watching it for free over the internet.

I had a good class today, where was everybody? i guess even yogis need to christmas shop. it was still pretty warm despite the lack of bodies. some days it is so hotsy-totsy and today was one of them. After class i rode down to the cliffs. The rainy week was fun, but it was nice to ride my bike in the warm sun today. What a blessing to live and practise so close to the beach! We’re lucky, heartbreakers, and today i took advantage of it. What a great feeling to be on the edge of the state, looking out on the horizon and seeing nothing but sailing boats and birds—nature. I’m from long beach, our ocean view is filled with oil tankers and huge shipping boats in from china.

since, i actually did enjoy the nature scene today, i don’t feel bad that i spent this evening watching the lakers over the internet. i don’t know what’s more disturbing in this screenshot—the score or pj’s expression as kb24 approaches the bench.

great teams don’t lose three in a row, tonight was the second loss in a row for the lakers, let’s see how they do on monday. what a scheduling conflict! my beloved packers are taking on the dreaded bears in a classic monday night football contest at the same time. i actually feel like going out to see the game, since the internet coverage will be weak, curse you espn! but i don’t wanna miss out on the lakers either. what’s a fan to do? Stay tuned friends, i’m sure i’ll bore you with the answer soon! ~m

Well, just between you, me and these 4 walls, it’s a challenge for me to make it to the 8 am class. Call me lazy bones, but i have lost my will to get up before sunrise. i used to wake up at 4:30 in the morning everyday and carpooling with my dearest friend by 6:30, now i can barely make it to the 8 am class. Great instructions today, E really focused on each step, i wish more people had been there.
For those about to bend, i salute you. Especially if you’re bending at 6 am. Oh my gosh, i tried making it to the 6 this morning, but it was so amazingly cold i couldn’t leave my little futon. My luxury, though, is having so many options as to when i can practise. i couldn’t do my noon today because of super-fun meetings, so i opted for the 4, but i could have done the 6 too, like i said, it’s nice to have so many options. i’m happy to not come home so late. i don’t live deep in the mountains, but still high enough that i don’t like pedaling around at night. okee dokee artichoakeys, the room was warm, but coulda been warmer. It’s so cold outside though, i think that’s like asking for it to snow. Well, it did in the high up mountains, right? When i went out this morning, everthing was frosted over, it was crazy. It was actually sad to look at the farm across the street with frost on all the delicious vegetables still trying to grow. i guess it’s not too bad that the farmers market is closed for the next two weeks! Lately, i’ve been noticing how my practise is affecting my life in small but great ways. I find myself correcting the way i sit in an office chair or the way i sit when i ride my bike. These corrections aren’t constant, but they should be, that’s how slouchy i am. I have the worst posture in the world, which is why i think i like bikram yoga so much.
You wanna know what i don’t understand? Two days after the packers lose their fourth straight game, packers.com is still running a poll on the home page asking “Who was the mvp for the Packers vs. Jacksonville?” You wanna know what? We lost the game—there was no mvp. Seriously, that bugs me. They should run a poll that asks “what do the packers need to do to get a win?”

While i’m at it, the Lakers really need to tighten up tight their terrible defense. How could they let the knicks score 60 in the first half? What an exciting start to the 3rd, i’ll admit, but i would have rather had them come in with a lead. I know pau was home with strep, but, still, they gotta keep the home floor. Yes, they won, but they should have done it with more authority. it was an exciting night though and thanks to nba.com for letting me listen to the radio broadcast! i feel so plugged in!

i also gotta give it up again to yahoo for keeping me entertained with full episodes of “chuck!” They say the soap opera is dead, but i’m here to say it ain’t. it’s alive and well and being doled out in weekly segments via chuck, my new favorite tv show. i just finished watching last night’s episode, i’m becoming the total internet nerd, aren’t i? i gotta say, chuck needs to man up and admit he’s got a badass girlfriend. sorry, heartbreakers, chuck’s girlfriend on tv is so hot and she just got even hotter with the christmas episode. i’d sleep well at night. see you tomorrow ~m

Hi heartbreakers, are you as cold as i am? I don’t think i’ll ever get used to the cold weather here. Tonight, for layers, i have on a wool sweater, a hoodie, wool socks and a trixie kitty! Oh my gosh, the studio was so warm and toasty today! If i could have stayed there, i would have. How nice it would have been to do a double while it was raining! I’m so spoiled though, i know some of you can only practise at 6 in the morning or at night. In the past two weeks, i’ve taken both of those options and i gotta say—i like the 10 best! The 10 am class is the perfect time for yoga, it really is. Afterwards, you have so much of the day ahead of you and you’re already off to such a great start!

Speaking of great starts, don’t worry, i’m not gonna talk about the Lakers! Speaking of great starts, sweat is finally in our first studio! Pick up these cool tanks at my favorite studio, village yoga!

Now that sweat is in one studio, the other 499 are sure to follow suit! Oh hey, i was screening tanks this weekend and i made this cool one for my moms, one of a kind, just like her! see you tomorrow ~m

Oops, i forgot to hit “publish” on friday! Sorry i missed you, heartbreakers, rest assured, i did write, but i forgot to “send!” That’s the first time in over a year that i haven’t “blogged.” Not too bad, huh? i do enjoy writing to you, the fun, i’m sure is mostly on this side of the table.

I gotta give it up to GWB. Did you see him at the podium with the shoes flying? Holy cow—he ducked the first shoe and stood right back up for the second! What a man. If i was in iraq and somebody was throwing shoes at me, i’d be ducking for bullets.

Barely made it to class this morning! I might not have made it on time if the clock on the wall hadn’t stopped! It wasn’t too crowded, but i did have to practise on the “cool” side of the room. However unlikely it is, one side of the room is always cooler than it should be. That’s the price i pay for getting to practise so late on such a crowded day. I should know better, but i’d rather not be attached to a particular spot anyway. After class, i got invited to a post-bikram breakfast with a bunch of friends! That would have been so much fun, but today is sunday, i gotta rush back to watch my packers lose again. Hey, i sat in a bar through a 4-12 season a few years back, this isn’t that bad. I guess. Go Lakers! ~m

Today during class, our teacher reminded us that if you give your practise honest effort, your body will really change and transform. The crazy thing is, she was using me as an example for this! It really is amazing how much my body has changed thanks to bikram yoga. Okay kids, that’s it for today, just a little thanks to Bikram himself for this practise, it’s a body-changer, life-saver, everything. ~m

Oh, oh, oh—i feel like horseshack! i just got the sickest adidas slides, i gotta tell you about them. despite all the yoga, i’m still brand loyal, especially when it comes to 3 stripes. I couldn’t believe these slides were adidas when i saw them—they don’t have 3 stripes *anywhere* that i can tell. Los Angeles is printed repeatedly over the footbed and a great big Lakers logo on the band over the foot. *plus* they’re molded into a fake alligator print! Now i can pretend that i got me a pair of gators! Alright, enough crass commercialism, how about i try and sell some tank tops? Ha ha. Class was exactly what i needed tonight. my teacher said something great about how our bodies have been one way for so long that it’ll take time to correct. I’ve got a lot of respect for all the people who work all day and then practise. It’s a lot easier to practise yoga in the day than it is at night. So, a tip of the water bottle to all my sweat friends who bend after work, namaste! ~m

My hands don’t do that. Your hands prolly don’t either, do they? it was kinda bugging me yesterday during practise. my teacher and i must have a psychic link because during garurasana, when it was bugging me, she corrected me on my hand position. After practise, we talked about how to get my hands straighter and she told me to go back a step. My hands are meeting top to bottom, but not side to side. She suggested going back to gripping my hands. I tried it today during practise and—wow! Folding and gripping my hands made me feel muscles in my arms and back that i din’t even know were there! It just goes to show that when you skip steps, you really miss out on all the benefits of learning the pose the right way.

After practise, my friend gave me hand written directions to a party she is planning. As she was going over the directions, i was totally waiting for the “can you make it into an invitation” request. it would not have been the first time someone asked me to design a party invitation and then not invite me!

40 years after they recorded it, my dad is finally getting royalties from his band’s sole recording! 20 years after their first recording, mudhoney is back on the road with a new record. they’re in town this week—does anyone care? i have to confess, i thought they peaked with their first ep, but i’m still excited that they’re in town. The flyer was really cool. i wanted to photograph it for you but there was a sticker on it advertising the flyer service that distributed it. So, no flyer art for you. i think it’s cool that the flyer distributors are trying to get their due advertising, but i hate it when adverts interfere with art. Awww, what am i talking about? i’m trying to make a living selling bikram yoga-inspired artwork. i guess, we all wanna get paid. My dad is a good example in patience. The group he was in was on to something and now they’re finally getting theirs, albeit 40 years later. Patience, perseverence, these are good topics to discuss now that there is a year archived over to the right! alright heartbreakers, hasta tomorrow ~m

Happy Bodhi Day to all my sweat friends and welcome to the first edition of the BC Report! Today i’m gonna talk about all things, not british columbian but, Before Christ! Going newest to oldest, let’s talk about Bodhi Day. On this day, in 596 BC, the Buddha achieved enlightenment. Well, i’m giving you the reader’s digest version, if you wanna read a little more, i won’t be offended if you go here. I’m not much of a reader myself, so, if you’re like me *and* you have the time and the bandwidth, this is really good to watch. They din’t have cameras back then, but you know what they did have? Marijuana. i’m not joking, smokey! I was on the discovery website the other day and found an article about a chinese tomb that was 700 BC. The man inside the tomb was buried with 2 pounds of pot! The article is goofy because it’s written by scientists who don’t know much about marijuana and how things work. they explain that he was buried with several “high-value, rare items” as well as the aforementioned 2 pounds of sinsemilla. Yes, it was high-grade herb, not seeded like the bricks you get from mexico! Anyway, he was also buried with marijuana seeds and they say they have no idea who he was or how the marijuana was “administered.” Hello? It’s obvious he was the pot dealer in the area. No one else could afford to be buried with a lot of expensive items *plus* 2 pounds of pot *plus* seeds. Let’s see, a pound to smoke and a pound to sell, that should last until the new plants start growing. How was it administered? Are these people really that dumb? You can make a good pipe out of an apple, thanks to God! In reality though, he was prolly buried with rolling papers that decomposed over the years—good rolling papers are thin and delicate, i can’t imagine good rolling paper lasting 2,700 years. Dumb scientists, any one of my friends coulda solved that nancy drew. So, 600 years before Christ, the Buddha achieved enlightenment; 700 years before Christ, a pot dealer in china died; and 3,000 years before Christ, our yoga poses were being formed. shaped? um, created? Awww shucks, i was hoping to tie all this Before Christ crap back to yoga and today’s yoga class being just like one that could have happened 5000 years ago, but i guess not since the heater was working somewhat. Don’t fault me for trying to wrap up an entry. see you tomorrow! ~m

Good class today, nice to see old friends back for more! The heater is like cartman and does whatever it wants. It was a good class to figure out where your body is with your practise. You really find your tight spots when it’s not so easy to bend! Today is also the anniversary of the Pearl Harbor attack. i was gonna write about how 35 years later there was a san francisco punk band called Pearl Harbor and the Explosions, but i found a video of them on youtube and decided against it—they were awful! no wonder Crime went to such lengths to emphasize the fact that they were (and to this day are) San Francisco’s First and Only Rock and Roll Band. if you have a spare 3 minutes, follow my time machine as it takes you back in time to labor day, 1978, san quentin prison, in honor on my little purr kitty, Crime doing “Piss On Your Dog!” ~m

She knew her limitations and wasn’t gonna push them, so good for her. What would have been better for her, though, would be to know her limits and go past them. or try anyway, what’s the worst that can happen? live forever or die trying, that was the name of the humpers’ best record and a great motto to, um, live by. good night, m

something creepy this way comes.
the other night, my computer powered on all by itself. you have to press a button or move the mouse significantly to turn it on. it was a little weird. of course, my desktop picture is a close-up of my cat who just passed away, so when i rolled out of bed to turn off my computer, i had to stare at his adorable little face. but it wasn’t so cute at that moment, it was actually creepy, like, how did my computer get on all of a sudden? i got back into bed with trixie and then, i’m not kidding, we heard scratching in the litterbox in the bathroom. trixie and i both looked at each other as if to say “what the fuck is that?” it was a little spook(itt)y!

ugh. i had a fly walking *all* over me during a lot of the standing series this morning! flies are one of the most disgusting of god’s creatures. i can stick with my focus if the fly is on me and not moving, but it makes my body convulse if i think about a fly walking on me. stillness between poses was not an option for me at times, i had to keep that awful thing away from me. then the reincarnation freak inside scolded me, “what if you just shooed away your best friend reincarnated as a fly?” ugh, the voices in my head scare me sometimes.

if you’re like me, you prolly fell in love with the concretes years ago. i just discovered the concretes on kcrw and it’s amazingly great. The voices are nice and clear, the arrangements fresh and loud. it’s a great performance of atmospheric pop! just between you and me, “under your leaves” had me in tears—it was so powerful. well, i used to sing that song to motor when he was stuck in the hospital for six weeks and i could only visit him for an hour everyday. maybe that had a little something to do with the waterworks, but don’t let that stop you from listening, okay? hasta tomorrow ~m

my fantastic day ended on a sorrow note. i had a great noon practise, met a cute girl, the lakers went on a 17-0 run to end the third quarter! Yes, my day was ending as well as it had started. The fourth quarter was a mere formality, the game was over. No one told that to the pacers though and before i knew it, kb24 and the other starters were back on the court. uh oh. The pacers stayed hot and ended up winning the game with a buzzer beater. what a dramatic, albeit, disappointing end to the game. The lakers quit before the game was over and the lesson for tonight is to stick with it. If you fall out of your standing bow, get back into, you *will* get it! Look what happened to my lakers tonight, they were already thinking about tomorrow’s game before tonight’s was over and they lost because of it. Don’t lose to the pose! If you fall out of your standing forehead to knee—get back into it, step-by-step, with the same positive energy you started with. Don’t think about anything else but doing that pose the right way and you will get it. okay, heartbreakers, that’s enough of my cheerleading for one day, see you tomorrow! ~m

I can’t believe i’ve been writing to you guys for so long! it seems like just the other day, there were no archives.
